What should we eat?

This screen introduces the concept that there are different food groups and we need to eat a variety of different types of food for different functions in the body. It provides information and has an interactive element in asking pupils to drag the pictures and statements to match the appropriate text. Explain to pupils that meals should contain a mixture of these food groups and use the PDF to allow them to draw a three-course meal they would like to eat that contains a suitable selection of foods. Encourage pupils to have a healthy mixture of foods with possibly fruit for desert. Remind pupils to drink water too. Encourage pupils to take their work home and discuss with their parents or guardians what they like about their meal and why it is healthy.

For background, the main food groups are:

Carbohydrates contained in foods such as cereals, bread, rice, potatoes, and pasta give the body energy.

Proteins contained in foods such as fish, nuts, eggs, meat, and pulses are needed for body tissues to grow, and repair after injury.

Fruit and vegetables, help the digestive system work properly and contain lots of vitamins and minerals that are vital for the body.

Dairy products such as cheese, milk, and yoghurt are rich in calcium, which is needed for strong bones. Remind students that low fat versions may be a better choice. Explain that eggs are also called a dairy product as, like milk, they originate from animals but do not involve the killing of animals.

Fats such as butter, olive oil, and margarine, are necessary in small quantities for good nerve function but most people eat too many fats so crisps and fatty foods should only be eaten in moderation. Too much sugar or fat in a person's diet is stored as fat in their bodies and excess fat is bad for us.

Water is vital for proper functioning of the body so should be drunk throughout the day.
